Excavation is only half the job, often the soil needs to be put back once the related work has been completed which is a process known as backfilling. Although putting the soil back into the trench or foundation at the end of the project sounds easy, there is a lot of knowledge of contract requirements, specifications and soil conditions that is required to do it properly. For example if a backfill is done without preventing the impact loading of any pipeline or other buried elements, it can result in damaging of the buried elements which can be a costly fix.

You can be assured that our backfilling crew has all the knowledge, tools and methods to tackle each problem with the best solution. Some of the methods we use are compacting in trenches, which means that once the soil is dumped back in, it is then compacted with a machine. Another method that we use is water jetting, similar to compacting in trenches but the soil is compacted by pressurized water applied to the bottom of the fill. Flowable fill is another common method for back filling, typically used for utility pipes, as it allows for easier future access. Flowable fill is done by using a cement-type material, that is dumped into the trench from a ready-mix truck.
